Vocal remover: make an instrumental or an a cappella

Upload a song and it is split into two tracks: the vocals and everything else. Take the instrumental for karaoke, the vocals for a remix or a cover, or slide between the two and hear the balance change as it plays.

How to make a karaoke track

  1. Step 1

    Upload the song

An audio file you have the rights to use. Music videos can be uploaded on Premium.

  2. Step 2

    Choose what to keep

Pick Music only for karaoke, Voice only for an a cappella, or move the sliders to any balance.

  3. Step 3

    Download

Download the instrumental, the vocals, or your mix as MP3 or WAV.

Instrumental, a cappella, or something in between

Every upload gives you both tracks, so there is no need to choose before you start. The instrumental is the song with the singer taken out: a backing track for karaoke, practice or covers. The vocal track is the singer on their own: an a cappella for remixes, sampling or learning a part by ear.

The two sliders let you set any balance between them. A popular one for practice is the instrumental at full level with the original vocal kept quietly underneath as a guide.

What separates cleanly

  • Studio recordings with one clear lead vocal separate most cleanly.
  • Mono and stereo files both work.
  • Live recordings and heavily compressed files can leave faint traces of the voice in the music, or the other way round.
  • Backing vocals and harmonies usually travel with the lead vocal.

Use songs you have the rights to

Separating a song does not change who owns it. Use your own recordings, songs you have a licence for, or music in the public domain, like the demo above.

Questions about removing vocals

How do I remove vocals from a song?

Upload the song to Separate music. It splits it into a vocal track and an instrumental; download the instrumental for karaoke.

Can I get just the vocals?

Yes. The same upload gives you the vocal on its own as well.

Does it separate drums, bass and other instruments?

No. It gives two tracks: the vocals, and everything else.

Can I paste a YouTube link?

No. Upload an audio file you have the rights to (or a video, on Premium).

Is it free?

Yes. Without an account you get 3 files up to 3 minutes each, 6 minutes in total, with no sign-up. A free account raises that to 30 minutes per file and 60 minutes of audio per day, still with no card. Premium allows up to 5 hours per file, 10 hours of audio per day, and fair use of 100 hours per 30 days.

Which files can I upload, and what do I get back?

On every plan: audio files (WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG and Opus). Video files (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and WMV) need Premium; the sound is taken from the video and you download the cleaned audio. Results download as MP3 or WAV.

What happens to my recording?

It is used only to make your result. It is never used to train models, and both the upload and the result are deleted automatically after 7 days.
